Happiest Baby
“Calmer babies equal calmer parents!” Learn how to transport your baby from screaming into serenity…in minutes. Nina Utterback, Growing Strong Families Parent Educator for Adair County Extension, will share tips at a special meeting on Tuesday, December 1st at the Family Supports Center (formerly Crook’s Clothing Building) in Greenfield. The program is slated to run from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Utterback will share information from Dr. Harvey Karp, a renowned pediatrician, who explains calming techniques. In the womb, babies are continually fed, shushed, jiggled and cuddled. After birth we often leave them alone, in almost total stillness, for hours a day! This abrupt change can trigger waves of crying which can erode a parent’s confidence and lead to nursing failure, marital distress, postpartum depression and even abuse. No wonder so many parents and babies have trouble adjusting during those first three months.

All parents of infants and soon-to-be parents are invited to attend the program along with others caring for infants.  The program is free of charge to all area parents and caregivers, but advance sign-up is needed to ensure sufficient materials. Free on-site child care is available upon request. To sign up, contact Adair County Extension at 641-743-8412 or e-mail powella@iastate.edu by noon on Monday, November 30.
