Gross Wins 4-H and FFA Beef Performance Contest

Rebecca Gross of Fontanelle earned both champion and reserve champion honors in the Adair County Fair 4-H and FFA Beef Performance Contest. Her two steers were the best in the 67 head competition. The champion steer produced $4.24 worth of retail value each day between the end of December and county fair. The 1410 entry gained 4.02 pounds per day and graded low Choice. It had a 15.4 square inch rib eye area and a USDA yield grade of 2.69. Gross also claimed the trophy for the performing pen.

ISU Extension Beef Specialist, Darrell Busby, commended Gross and the other exhibitors for producing an exceptional set of cattle.  Busby shared the results of the contest at a special meeting hosted by the Adair County Cattlemen. Even though rate of gain figures are down industry wide due to the extreme wet and muddy conditions this year, the entire group gained an average of 3.17 pounds per day of feed.  Eighty-two percent graded low choice or better and forty-two percent were either yield grade #1 or #2.

Joining Gross as purple ribbon winners in the contest were: Brad Baudler, Ben Baudler(3), Matt Jensen, Susan Herr, Millie Varley(3), Christine Gross, Beth Baudler,  Cole Tanner(2),  Rachel Herr, and Greg Dudley.  Millie Varley took reserve honors in the pen division.

Blue ribbons went to: Rachel Herr(2), Greg Dudley, Velista Martin, Brad Baudler(3), Kysa Downing, Millie Varley( 3), Susan Herr(3), Christine Gross (2), Cole Tanner, Hollie Perrin, Brittany Firch (2), Erika Lundy(4), Matt Jensen(2), Casey Tanner (4), Matthew Noland, Rebecca Gross, Christine Gross, Rachel Herr, Katie Lents, Chisum Downing, Matt Jensen (2), Dani Luhrs, Kevin Ford, Cole Tanner, Ben Baudler, Keelan Woods (2), Grant Dudley, Megan Eblen, and Montgomery Funke.

Pine View Angus of Stuart topped the open class division. The champion animal was a heifer that graded low choice with a 3.32 yield grade. The CAB premium awarded to the animal helped it place first among the 16 entries by raising its value to $156/cwt.  Ellen Varley claimed second in the contest and Shannon Lundy took 3rd.
