Career Adventure Trips

Exploring career options is one important component of the career development process. Area students used their spring break to master new skills and explore options in the field of natural resources during the Springbrook Overnight Adventure. A group of students also traveled to ISU to visit the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Career adventures for middle school students are a joint effort between ISU Extension-Adair County and Nodaway Valley AmeriCorps State of Promise Initiative. Special funding is provided with a grant from the Creston Cluster Decat project.

Poultry Workshop Scheduled

Poultry nutrition and health will be the theme for a special workshop open to all 4-H and FFA members set for Saturday, May 17th from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. at the old 4-H building on the Adair County Fairgrounds in Greenfield. Youth are encouraged to bring their questions and their favorite chicken or waterfowl to the workshop.

Spring Into Nature at Springbrook

How often do you go on night hikes or go owl calling? Have you ever tried your skill at archery or canoeing? You can participate in these activities and more when you attend Spring Into Nature at Springbrook June 30th - July 1st. The trip is being organized by the Southwest Iowa Area 4-H Youth Council and is open to 7th and 8th grade youth.

Time to Register for State 4-H Conference

The Iowa State 4-H Council invites youth 8th - 12th grade to "Ignite the Flame". State 4-H Conference is set for June 24 - 26 in Ames. These three days will be packed with new friends and many activities. Katrina Schulteis and Kelsie Cass, both students at Nodaway Valley High School, are part of the State 4-H Conference planning team.

Adair County Swine Exhibitors Tag Pigs

Adair County 4-H and FFA members identified 228 head of swine to be exhibited at the county fair in July. Livestock ID sheets for bucket/bottle calf, breeding heifer, cow-calf, feeder calf, horse, dog, dairy, dairy goat, meat goat breeding doe, and breeding sheep are due to the Extension office by May 15th in order to be eligible for the fair.

Dog Project Workshop Scheduled for Adair County

Dog project members will want to attend the special Dog Project Workshop scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 1 - 3:30 p.m. at the Adair County Fairgrounds. Jenny Vincent, dog judge and trainer, will be leading the workshop.

Adair County 4-H'ers Shine at Southwest Area Awards

Seven Adair County 4-Her's earned spots on state leadership teams or advanced to state level competition as a result of area competition. The annual competition doesn't only provide an avenue for recognizing high achieving youth, but also encourages youth to develop both oral and written communication skills. Each participant must prepare a written documentation of their achievements and interview with a three-member panel. For more information about how 4-H grows youth leaders, contact the Adair County Extension Office.
Kelly Laughery Memorial 4-H Community Service Scholarships

Kelly Laughery was a member of the Adair County 4-H Youth Council from 2000-2001 to 2003-2004. In her short life she reached out and served the Adair County community in many ways from spearheading a cemetery restoration project to working at literally hundreds of day camps. The Adair County 4-H Community Service Scholarship has been renamed in her honor.

SWIA Jr. Camp

Join the fun at SWIA 4-H Jr. Camp June 15 - 18. May 23 is registration deadline, but there are spots for only 100 campers, so get your registration in early. Apply to be a Camp Counselor (16 years and older). Applications due March 24th.

Statewide 4-H Recognition

Adair County 4-H was well represented at the statewide 4-H Recognition Event. Elizabeth Baudler, Natalie Bohling, Kelsie Cass, Rachel Herr, Velista Martin, and Katrina Schulteis all advanced to the state level from SW Iowa 4-H awards competition.

Adair County Fair Trophy Donors

Tax Deductions for 4-H Adult Volunteers

Your contributions to a 4-H club, the county 4-H program, or the 4-H foundation, whether made in cash or in goods contributed, are tax deductible if you itemize deductions on Schedule A of Form 1040. Some expenses you incur in your 4-H work are also deductible.

Awards Day 2006

Approximately 275 people attended Adair County 4-H Awards Day, Sunday, November 12th. 4-H clubs, individual members, and adult volunteer leaders and alumni were honored for their outstanding work during the group's annual event. Click here to view award results and photos.
