4-H'ers and Volunteers to Be Honored

Miss Iowa, Anne Michael Langguth, will be a special guest at the annual Adair County 4-H Awards Day set for Sunday, November 8th at the Nodaway Valley High School Auditorium in Greenfield. The program is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. The public is invited to join 4-H'ers and 4-H volunteers to hear Langguth deliver a challenge to all youth and perform a violin solo. Miss Iowa will be available to sign autographs following the program.
Adair County Family Programming

Knowing infant CPR could save a child’s life. Adair County will be hosting a free infant CPR class on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, 6:00-7:45 p.m. at the Family Support Center located at 226 Public Square. Expectant parents, parents, grandparents, and child care providers, including babysitters over the age of 12, along with siblings over the age of 12, are encouraged to attend this session. Agriculture Outlook and Management Seminar

Adair County Extension will be hosting an Agricultural Outlook and Management Seminar Thursday, November 12th in Greenfield. Adair County 4-H'ers Do Well at Ak-Sar-Ben

An Adair County 4-H'er exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer at the Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Exposition in Omaha. She first claimed the Division II championship before claiming the top prize. Her brother also competed for the championship by taking reserve honors in Division II with his steer.
Emergency Volunteer Survey Being Conducted

Just 10 minutes of your time now can make a big difference if Adair County is faced with an emergency. Emergency Management personnel need to be able to quickly assess a situation and to quickly activate volunteers. Complete an on-line survey to help establish a data base of the skills and interests of potential volunteers. This is one small way you can make a big difference.

Pets and Kids Visit Good Samaritan Home

Cami, teen leader for the NV Early Out 4-H Club, introduces her dog, Magic, to residents at the Good Samaritan Home in Fontanelle. Besides visits by the eighteen 4th and 5th grade members, the residents also met Austin O'Brien and his drug dog, Moses; Sarah Gaukel and her dog, Sadie, and her turtle, Tuddles; and Gina and her rabbit, Holly.
Agriculture: Food and Jobs

Iowa agriculture puts healthy, affordable food choices on the table of today’s consumers and it boosts county and state economies, according to a recently-completed economic analysis sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF). Production agriculture and ag-related industries directly and indirectly employ one of every six Iowans (or 17 percent of the state’s workforce), based on 2007 Census of Agriculture data. Family Storyteller a Big Hit

Family Storyteller a Big Hit
Twelve families completed the Family Storyteller series at the Greenfield Library. The six week program is focused on building the early literacy skills of preschool age children though family reading and fun time. The program was sponsored by Growing Strong Families, an initiative of Adair County Extension, with funding support from the Creston Cluster Decat and FACT Empowerment. A monthly book club has been established in Adair County for graduates of the Family Storyteller program.

An Apple a Day

Does an apple a day, keep the doctor away? A medium sized apple has less than a 100 calories and is a good source of antioxidants. According to Barb Fuller, ISU Nutrition and Health Program Specialist, apples are also a great source of fiber and are easy to store.

2008 Land Values

Adair County land values increased by 12.4% in 2008 according to the ISU Annual Land Value Survey. Results of the survey show the average value for Adair County land in 2007 as $2742 and in $3081 in 2008. The state average went up 14.3%.
