Keeping It Green Event Planned to Kick-Off National 4-H Week

A special county-wide 4-H kick-off event is planned for Sunday, October 5th from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. at the Adair County 4-H and FFA Center on the fairgrounds in Greenfield. All current members along with potential members and their families are encouraged to attend the come-and-go event.

Apple Orchard Serves as Class Room

Diane Weiland shared information about fruit production at Henry A Wallace Country Life Center (HAW) orchard as part of the Transitioning Organics Workshop. More than 50 participants from three states attended the workshop organized by ISU Extension and the Leopold Center. Fruit and vegetable sessions were held at the HAW while the Neely-Kinyon Research Farm south of Greenfield hosted sessions on organic row crops.

Alfalfa Harvest Reminder

Alfalfa plants cut immediately after a partial freeze (non-killing
frost) and which experience further normal growing temperatures
will start new regrowth from crown buds, using accumulated proteins and carbohydrates that would otherwise be used for over wintering and regrowth the following spring. When these late-recovering plants experience a killing freeze a few days or weeks later, they will be physiologically weaker and more susceptible to winter injury.

Join Clover Kids

First through Third graders are invited to join Clover Kids. The group meets the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at the Extension Office meeting room in Greenfield to play active games, make crafts, explore books, and enjoy a nutritious snack. Clover Kids begins on October 4th. There is a one-time $10 registration fee. Sign up is needed by September 30th. Family Storyteller Now Available in Adair County

Parents of 3-5 year olds will want to sign up for the nationally acclaimed Family Storyteller series. It is being offered at two locations this fall. The Public Resource Technology Center will host the series beginning October 6th in Orient; for more information, contact Sharon Mensing at 641-337-5061. The series is also slated for Greenfield beginning the evening of September 11th; for more information, contact Adair County Extension at 641-743-8412.

Adair County Announces Master Gardener Program

Enrollments are being accepted for the Fall Master Gardener class. The 40 hour training program is offered by Iowa State University. The Adair County Extension will be a host site for the program set to begin September 8th. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30-9:30 p.m. There is also a Saturday field trip to ISU. ServSafe™ Food Safety Certification Course Scheduled

If Only I knew my Brain Style...

“Ever wonder why you and your child sometimes mix about as well as oil and water? It may be that your brain styles are opposites,” said Donna K. Donald, a family life specialist with Iowa State University Extension. By understanding the four brain styles, you and your child can get along and even learn to enjoy each other.

Career Adventure Trips

Exploring career options is one important component of the career development process. Area students used their spring break to master new skills and explore options in the field of natural resources during the Springbrook Overnight Adventure. A group of students also traveled to ISU to visit the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Career adventures for middle school students are a joint effort between ISU Extension-Adair County and Nodaway Valley AmeriCorps State of Promise Initiative. Special funding is provided with a grant from the Creston Cluster Decat project.

Fight Hunger in Adair County

Poverty is a reality for more than 1 in 10 Adair County residents. The Horizons project seeks to make sure people living in poverty have their basic needs met and to reduce the poverty level. The Food for Everyone Committee identifies several ways for community members to get involved.
