YES! You are correct.

Placing the used tree 5-6 feet from the feeder(s) gives the birds some temporary cover that is helpful in providing some escape cover from predators, like cats or sharp-shinned hawks. Placing it too close to the feeders - - as in answer "d" - - may actually discourage them from using a feeder, as cats or other predators may lay in wait for them.
