Dubuque is Iowa's oldest city, established in 1833. Named for Julien
Dubuque, the city was an original Charter City, meaning it was a city
before Iowa became a state.
Dubuque was also the location of Iowa's first church and the first
newspaper published in Iowa, The Dubuque Visitor, which began on
May 11, 1836.
Since its conception the city has been under five flags: French, Spanish, English, the Imperial Flag of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the U.S. flag.
