Summer Tour
June 26, 1998
Members participating in the June 26 IACAA Professional Improvement
Tour will visit several agricultural businesses and educational centers
in Central Iowa. This educational offering is designed to give participants
an overview of Central Iowa's agricultural infrastructure.
Agenda for the
1998 IACAA Professional Improvement Summer Tour
Directions from I-80/35 to Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. Plots:
From 1-80/35, take the Merle hay Road exit (exit 131). At the exit ramp,
go north onto Merle Hay Road. Take Merle hay Road north about 2 miles to
NW 62nd Avenue. Turn west (left) at the intersection of NW 62nd and Merle
Hay Road. There is a Subway Restaurant and a stoplight at this intersection.
Take NW 62nd Avenue west about 1.5 miles. The plots are on the right hand
side of the road, just past the Johnston High School. There is adequate
parking inside the gate area. NOTE: Be there by 9:00 a.m.
9:00 a.m.

Arrive Agronomy Plots. Meet at plots to ride the tram to Beal Building
for registration. Met by Mr. Gary Thull, Educational Services Manager and
Mr. Sam Wise, Educational Services Associate. Mr. Wise will also serve
as driver for the campus tour.
9:15 a.m.

Arrive at the Beal Building, Seed Quality Facility, 7150 NW 70th Avenue,
Johnston (Tel: 515/270-3389).
Registration in SQF conference room.
Rolls, coffee and orange juice will be available during registration.
9:30 a.m.

Overview of Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. and Seed Quality (Thull).
Tour of facility (Thull/Wise).
10:15 a.m.

Depart for Reid Research Center.
10:30 a.m.

Trait and Technology Development presentation and tour of facility (Thull/Wise).
11:00 a.m.

Educational Services presentation concludes. Depart for Agronomy Expo Plots.
11:05 a.m.

Agronomy plot tour and discussions. Mr. Dan Bailey, PHI Sales Agronomist
along with precision farming discussions with Dr. Todd Peterson, Precision
Farming Specialist.
11:45 a.m.

End of Pioneer Hi-Bred presentations. Depart for Iowa Machine Shed, 11151
Hickman Road, Urbandale (Tel: 515/270-6818) for Lunch.
12:00 Noon - 1:15 p.m.

Lunch and comments from the Iowa Pork Producers Association officials on
current concerns, including new manure application regulations and certification
of applicators.
1:15 p.m.

Travel to National Pork Producers Council, 1776 NW 114 Street, Clive (Tel:
515/223-2600).
1:30 p.m.

Topics and visits will include the NPPC web page and electronic technology
efforts, swine end-product enhancement, swine breeding & maternal line
project, NPPC promotional efforts around the world and the NPPC Publication
and Distribution Center.
3:00 p.m.
Be sure to bring the family along, for a fun weekend in the Des Moines
Metro area!
