Hawkeye Farm Show/ISU Extension Seminars

SE Iowa Agricultural Research Association Annual Meeting

March 7, 2013, 9:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Johnson County Extension Office, Iowa City

 

All are invited to attend the Crawfordsville Research Farm Annual meeting. If you are not a member and would like to join, 5-year memberships are only $25. Speakers at this year’s event are: Roger Elmore on Corn Populations and Row Spacing; Jim Fawcett on Soybean Replant Study Results; Mark Carlton & Steve Berger on Cover Crops – What Are Your Options; Antonio Mallarino on New K Recommendations; and Matt Helmers on Water Management for a Drought Year. Field Crop Scout School

March 9, 2013, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Field Crop Scout School is designed for those who have little or no previous scouting experience and plan to work as crop scouts.  The school provides field crop scouts with an overview of the basic diagnostic skills required for recognizing and documenting field crop problems in corn and soybean.  Registration includes handouts and a set of ISU Extension field guides. Commercial Pesticide Applicator Test Help Session

March 11, 2013, 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Washington County Extension Office, Washington

 

A training session designed to help prepare individuals for the commercial pesticide applicator examinations will be offered in the Washington Co. Ext. Office on the fairgrounds at 2223 250th St.  The training session will cover the Iowa Core Manual and categories 1A (Ag Weed), 1B (Ag Insect), 1C (Ag Disease), 3O,T, and G (Ornamental, Turf, and Greenhouse), 4 (Seed Treatment) and 6 (Right-of-Way).  Training on the Iowa Core Manual will be given for the first 2 hours, with the training on the other categories following.  There is a $25 fee per person for the training session. The session does NOT qualify as a continuing instructional course. On the same day the Department of Ag is offering testing for both commercial and private applicators at Marr Park at 2943 Highway 92, Ainsworth, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (about a 10 minute drive from the extension office). Biomass Crop Production Workshop

March 19, 2013, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Johnson County Extension Office, Iowa City

 

This workshop will provide information on miscanthus and other perennial crops for bio-energy in Iowa. Speakers include Emily Heaton, ISU Agronomist on how bio-crops can benefit Iowa, Ferman Milstir, on the University of Iowa’s biomass power project, and Dean Tiessen, New Energy Farms, on how to plant and harvest miscanthus. ISU Northeast Research Farm Annual Meeting

March 20, 2013, 9:30 a.m. to noon

Borlaug Learning Center-  Nashua

 

Corn Genetic Advancements & Crop Weather to be Highlighted. Speakers included Elwynn Taylor, ISU Extension Climatologist;  Arnel Hallauer, Renowned ISU Corn Breeder;  and Ken Pecinovsky, Research Farm Superintendant.  Following lunch, the NEIAEA board of directors will meet.  The field day is free and open to the public.  For more information about the event, call Brian Lang at 563-382-2949.
