CROP PROGRESS

The warm, dry weather and wind have really sped up the maturing of the corn crop, with some fields already harvested in the area. Soybeans are not maturing quite as rapidly, but I have seen some fields that are almost ready to harvest. Chances are we have lost a few bushels with this rapid maturing of the crop, but at least we have a better chance of a timely harvest this fall.

FALL STALK NITRATE TEST

Some of you may be interested in sending in some Stalk Nitrate Test samples to fine tune your corn nitrogen fertilizer program and others may actually be required to do so, i.e. if it’s a requirement in a CSP contract or related program.  Fifteen 8-inch long samples should be cut starting 6 inches above the soil when the corn is 1-3 weeks beyond black layer. This can often be done as a field is being combined, or even after it is combined if the cutter bar is set to be about 6 inches above the soil. If sending your samples to ISU, the sample submission form to use is at:  www.agron.iastate.edu/soiltesting/CSN.pdf The test is $11 per sample.  Instructions on taking a good sample is included in the following publication:  www.extension.iastate.edu/Publications/PM1584.pdf
