CORN

Black Cutworms

Several inbound flights of black cutworm moths have entered Iowa.  It is unclear if the moths just passed through or if they stopped long enough to lay eggs.  If eggs were laid, cutting of emerged corn plants may be starting south of Highway 20 and may soon start north of Highway 20.  The map below shows the predicted cutting dates.  In crop reporting Districts 6, 8, and 9, there was a mid-April flight as well as a late-April flight; the orange dates are for eggs laid by the first flight and the black dates for eggs laid in the second flight.
