Master Equine Manager Guidelines

Master Equine Manager Level I

The Iowa State University Extension (ISUE) Master Equine Manager Program will consist of eight 3-hour sessions which will cover the science of horse management and the concepts of riding and training. The program class will be a mix of discussion and hands-on skill development.  Six of the eight sessions will be core curriculum, with two optional sessions chosen by the interests of the group. 

Purpose: 

  • To provide in-depth training for horse enthusiasts to increase the knowledge and skill in equine science, care and training.
  • To increase the quality, competitiveness and economic potential of the Iowa horse industry.
  • To develop a cadre of knowledgeable equine managers to assist ISUE in conducting educational programs and activities.
  • To develop a volunteer network for Youth and 4-H/FFA horse programs.
  • To develop an Advisory Board representing educational institutions, industry partners and horse organizations.

Level I Program Requirements:

  • Must attend the six core sessions and two optional sessions to become a certified Master Equine Manager.
  • Complete Equine Quality-Care Assurance (EQA) activity/worksheet.
  • Must have a strong interest and desire to develop skill in equine care and management.
  • Must be willing to share and demonstrate horse skills and knowledge with others.

Delivery Modes:

  • On-site learning sessions or workshops
  • Web-based instruction with centrally located on-site demonstration sessions
  • ICN, web-cast, videotape/DVD and other learning technologies as appropriate
     

Enrollment/Fee:

  • Enrollment will be limited to the first 20 people registered with paid enrollment fees. Registrations received without enrollment fees will not be accepted.
  • A program fee of $550 will be assessed for the complete Master Equine Manager program.  All reference materials (including the Master Equine Manager Handbook), instructors, facilities, and refreshments will be provided.
     

Certification Requirements:

  • Certification Levels:
    • Level one (I) attained through completion of Master Equine Manager program
    • Advanced Levels (II, III) developed as needed.
  • Maintaining certification:
    • Three hours of continuing education training each year*. Continuing education hours may be from ISU workshops/conferences or from other approved equine programs.

Facilities:

  • Facilities will be arranged by local extension staff/partners.
  • Meeting room suitable for slides, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Horse care area or riding arena/round pen.
  • Parking to include horse trailer space as needed. Public address system with wireless microphone capability.

Master Equine Manager Level II

The Iowa State University Extension (ISUE) Master Equine Manager Program Level II will consist of individual modules covering in-depth aspects of horse management and the concepts of riding and training.

Purpose:

  • To provide in-depth training on specific topics to selected horse enthusiast in order to increase the knowledge and skill in equine science, care and training.

  • To increase the quality, competitiveness and economic potential of the Iowa horse industry.

  • To develop a cadre of knowledgeable equine managers to assist ISUE in conducting educational programs and activities.

  • To develop a volunteer network for Youth and 4-H/FFA horse programs.


Student Requirements:

  • Completed MEM Level 1

  • Must have a strong interest and desire to develop skill in equine care and management.

  • Must be willing to share and demonstrate horse skills and knowledge with others.

  • A commitment to participate in the class is required.

  • Web-based instruction with centrally located on-site demonstration sessions

  • Web-cast, videotape/DVD and other learning technologies as appropriate


Enrollment/Cost:

  • Enrollment will be limited to 20 people registered with paid enrollment fees. Registrations received without enrollment fees will not be accepted.

  • A program fee per module of $495 will be assessed for the Master Equine Manager program level II to include presenters, reference materials, facilities, and refreshments. If you attend more then one module, the program fee is $450 per module.


Certification Requirements:

  • Each module will cover a different subject. After completion of a module you will receive a certificate in that subject matter. Participants can take one or all modules.

  • An examination (written and/or practical) will be given on the module. Participants must pass the examination on the material with an 80% or better.

  • Maintaining certification: Six hours of continuing education training each year. Continuing education hours may be from ISU workshops/conferences or from other approved equine programs.


Benefits and Opportunities for the Certified Master Equine Manager Level II

  • Receive a certificate from Iowa State University in each module – emergency care, functional anatomy, equine nutrition, equine forage management, equine business management

  • Develop new skills to enhance employment opportunities within the industry.

  • Receive detailed knowledge and “hands-on” experience

  • Participate in horse organizations with public education programs.

  • CEU credits are available for completing this program.


Upon completion of the Master Equine Manager program, each graduate will receive:

  • Framed Graduation Certificate

  • Master Equine Manager wallet identification card with module listed

  • Permanent Master Equine Manager name badge.

  • Entry to database for receiving program updates and Master Equine Manager Overview e-newsletter (MEMO).


Use of the ‘Master Equine Manager’ title:

The title “Iowa Master Equine Manager” is given exclusively by Iowa State University Extension to individuals successfully completing the Master Equine Manager Program. The Master Equine Manager Program Completion Certificate should be displayed with pride reflecting the completion of the training program. ISU Extension, of which the Master Equine Manager Program is a part, must be viewed as a source of research-based learning and information. The Master Equine Manager Program Certificate and/or the ‘Master Equine Manager’ title shall not be used to provide any endorsement by Iowa State University of a commercial product or business. The program logo is trademarked by Iowa State University and cannot be used without the permission of the Iowa State University Trademark office.
