2009 State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Winners Announced

6/25/2009

OELWEIN, Iowa – The “Milkoholics” from Dubuque County placed first in the annual State 4-H Youth Dairy Quiz Bowl June 16 at Oelwein High School. The Dubuque County team will represent Iowa 4-H at the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Ky., in November.

The Dubuque County team came from behind to win the senior division. Team members Jessica Hammerand, Courtney Ehrlich, Michael Bahl, Scott Wolf and Kyle Demaner were coached by Shirley Simon.

Second place in the senior division went to the Fayette County team of Logan Worden, Kyle Bishop, Rachel Scott and Chris Stewart, coached by Marilyn Steffens.

“The event provides some experience for up and coming youth to demonstrate their knowledge about the dairy industry,” said Mike Anderson, agriculture program coordinator with Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.

Intermediate and junior teams competed in the day’s events as well, Anderson said.

Fayette County won the intermediate division. Team members Joey Adams, Molly Schmitt, Brant Wade, Dayle Lantzky, Kelli Steinlage and Nicole Fagle were coached by Marilyn Steffens.

Delaware County took second place in the intermediate division. Team members James Goldsmith, Megan Nefzger, Nicole Engelken and Jacob Fitzpatrick were coached by Jennifer Zumbach.

Zumbach also coached the junior division winners. This Delaware County team included Matthew Lansing, Katelyn Goldsmith, Jamie Nefzger and Kari Fitzpatrick.

Fayette County took second place with members Katie Stewart, Ashley Ballmler, Caryn Stewart, Sally Hamlett, Mary Scott and Cynthia Hamlett, coached by Marilyn Steffens.

Each division winner received a traveling trophy from the Fayette County 4-H Dairy Club in honor and memory of Connie Stewart and her daughter, Sarah Stewart.

Twenty-seven senior, 22 intermediate and 26 junior youth participated in the Dairy Quiz Bowl. The scores of a written exam, team questions and toss-up competition combined to determine the winners of each match in this double elimination event, Anderson explained. The Iowa 4-H Foundation Dairy Endowment provided plaques for the event and will provide funding for the senior team’s trip to Louisville.
