Butler County 4-H'er Receives Iowa State Fair Scholarship
8/12/2008
AMES, Iowa—A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Butler County 4-H'er. Rebecca Abbas of Aplington has received an Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement.
Abbas, a nine-year 4-H member, is the daughter of Rick and Melanie Abbas. She has participated most actively in the project areas of photography, swine and home improvement. During her 4-H career, she served as her club’s historian, treasurer, vice president and president. Abbas also has shown pigs and exhibited photography at the Iowa State Fair.
“4-H has greatly influenced me throughout the years. When I started 4-H, I was scared of talking in front of people. Since I have held offices and done working exhibits through 4-H, my communication skills have improved a lot,” said Abbas. “I will definitely be able to use those communication skills in my future career as a veterinarian.”
Abbas is a graduate of Aplington-Parkerburg High School and plans to major in animal science/pre-veterinary medicine at Iowa State University.
In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames. For more information about 4-H, how to get involved or how to apply for a 4-H scholarship, contact the local county office of ISU Extension.
