ILF Conservationist Laura Krouse

Laura KrouseLaura Krouse manages 72 acres of oats, soybeans, hay and open-pollinated seed corn, which has been grown on her farm since 1903.

Abbe Hills Garden is her CSA farm which serves around 150 families in the eastern Iowa area. Laura has implemented several sustainable practices on her farm and feels strongly that all who farm should be protecting the land as well. “If we don’t take care to use limited natural resources carefully and responsibly, they will go away,” said Krouse.

Her interest was sparked while attending Iowa State as an undergraduate learning about conservation and ecology. She holds degrees from ISU in Agronomy and Ag Business; a master’s from the University of Florida.

In addition to serving the Iowa Learning Farm as a conservationist, Laura is also involved in the Linn Soil and Water Conservation District and has for 20 years. She has also served the Iowa Valley RC & D and southeast Linn Community Center and has taught Sunday School. In 2007, Laura received the Spencer Award for Sustainable Agriculture, given by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.

Laura spends her free time gardening, reading and walking.
