ILF Cooperator Rob Stout

Rob StoutProducer: Rob Stout

Location: West Chester, Washington County

Soil Region: 4, Southern Iowa Plains

ILF Demonstration: Soybeans with and without insecticide treatment

Bio: Rob has been farming for almost 30 years alongside his father. The farm has been in his family since 1926. He farms 1,000 acres and has a hog operation of 6,000 head. He has been allowing a portion of his farm for Iowa State research for some time.

He started no-tilling in the spring of 1979 after a heavy rain. He saw the erosion and knew he needed to make a change. Stout is committed to leaving the soil better than he found it. His organic levels have almost doubled since he began no-tilling.

Rob is a member of Farm Bureau, Iowa Corn Growers, Iowa Soybean and Innovative Growers Associations, and is a trustee for his church.

Building a Culture of Conservation: “There are a lot of innovators in my area. The early folks have embraced conservation. In 20 years, we have made a lot of progress. The easy changes have been made, but future changes are going to be harder.”
