Bio: Jerry Crew says he has been a conservationist since he was a child. He recalls rains that covered the crops and knew that losing the crop was bad, and has since realized that losing the soil is worse. He is a fourth generation farmer and long-time no-tiller. “The first year is the hardest. You need multiple years to see how no-till works.”
Jerry is involved in many organizations including commissioner for Clay Soil and Water Conservation District as well as the state CDI board, Farm Bureau, Clay County Food for Life, and is an elder in his church. He is an avid gardener.
Building a Culture of Conservation: “A lot of farmers are addicted to tillage. In order to switch to no-till, you need to stop tilling.”
“I believe no-tillage is giving me better yields and reducing my costs. Conservation doesn’t cost, conservation pays.”
