Weather delays couldn’t keep Iowa State from having a strong showing at the 19th Annual Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism held January 3rd – 5th at University of Houston!
While Drs. Bob Bosselman, Nicholas and Lisa Thomas had flight cancelations due to heavy snow storms, fortunately Dr. Tom Schrier assisted by Dr. Catherine Strohbehn were able to make it to Houston to lead a group of 21 hospitality students at the conference.
The conference serves as an opportunity for graduate students around the country to give stand up and poster presentations related to research projects. Faculty advisors from participating schools provide feedback and network with students. This year, the conference had 310 registrants with approximately 20 unable to attend due to weather issues. Yet the conference went on!
ISU students shared research from graduate course projects as well as their masters’ thesis and doctoral dissertation work. Of the 100 stand up presentations, 9 were from ISU students. Additionally, of the 187 posters, 19 were presented by ISU students. In addition to the idea exchanges, a panel of industry practitioners and respected academics spoke about collaborative research endeavors and provided practical and strategic advice to participants. The conference also allowed students the opportunity to cultivate networks around areas of interest and develop new friendships.
