ISU Alums in Leadership Roles at School Nutrition Association Conference

Many of the graduates of the Iowa State University distance doctoral program were in leadership roles at the School Nutrition Association Annual National Conference held in Dallas July 11- 14th.  Katie Wilson, current Executive Director of the National Foodservice Management Institute and Past President of SNA and the School Nutrition Foundation, was the driving force behind a lip sync competition entitled “Putting on the Ritz’. She also made several presentations during the General Sessions to the 5,500 plus members attending the conference. Janey Thornton, current USDA Deputy Secretary and former SNA President, also presented at General Sessions and Breakouts. Mary Kate Harrison was recognized as Director of the Year. Chef Cyndie Story presented two fun-filled sessions “Boot Scoot to Wellness”, at which participants learned some fun exercises to improve wellness.

The Child Nutrition Showcase (chaired by HRIM Extension Specialist Catherine Strohbehn) is the opportunity for members to present posters about research or best practice. Participants included Beth Rice, Tami Cline, and current HRIM faculty Lakshman Rajagopal and Catherine Strohbehn.  Beth Rice and Carol Longley served on the review committee while former faculty Jeannie Sneed and graduate Diane Schweitzer (current chair of the Research Committee) served as judges at the Showcase. Tami Cline received the Top Award in Research Category for her innovative look at vending trends in schools.

Strohbehn, Longley, Rice and Sneed attended the College Section meeting; Section Chair Strohbehn facilitated a discussion of recruitment for careers in Child Nutrition Programs. Diane Schweitzer and Marie Richardson served as facilitators at several of the education sessions. Barb Jirka, Mary Begalle, Julie Boettger, and Jeannie Sneed represented their work organizations in the large hall of exhibitors. Food and Nutrition Extension Specialist Ruth Litchfield presented with other researchers findings from the Team Nutrition Wellness Project.
