About 50 Iowa representatives attended the School Nutrition Association’s (SNA) Annual Conference in Denver last week. This group included state agency staff, child nutrition professionals directing school meals programs, ISU faculty Catherine Strohbehn and Susan Arendt, and many alumni.
Drs. Strohbehn and Arendt gave a research based presentation with KSU partners Kevin Roberts (ISU alum) and Kevin Sauer, and hosted several posters (authored in collaboration with hospitality management team members Dr. Lakshman Rajagopal, Jinhyun Jun, Janell Meyer, Carol Klitzke and ISU alum Dr. Cynthia Dawso Van Druff). Alum Dr. Paola Paez also exhibited a peer-reviewed research poster.
USDA Undersecretary Dr. Janey Thornton spoke at the first general session to the 6,000 plus conference goers about implementation of the new meal patterns. Dr. Barb Jirka received the SNA Industry Award.
Dr. Chef Cyndie Story demonstrated culinary techniques to improve efficiency in handling fresh produce. Dr. Beth Rice coordinated the Child Nutrition Showcase (Poster Session) and facilitated the College Section Meeting.
As marketing director for Schwann’s foodservice division, Dr. Mary Begalle oversaw the company’s exhibit. Dr. Julie Boettger and Dr. Jirka assisted in judging of the Child Nutrition Showcase entries. Dr. Katie Wilson coordinated activities of staff from the National School Foodservice Management Institute as its Executive Director. The contribution of ISU hospitality management program to child nutrition services over the years is evident with the visibility and activism of these graduates.
