HRI Faculty Susan Arendt, Lakshman Rajagopal, and Catherine Strohbehn and Food Safety Project Coordinator Janell Meyer participated in the 2010 Food Safety Education Conference in Atlanta, Georgia March 24-26 and attended pre-conference workshops on food allergens, social media, and adult education.
The conference attracted 700 attendees from industry and academic settings who gathered to review recent research and best practices for food safety communications. Representative from government agencies (CDC, FDA and USDA) and consumer groups (S.T.O.P. and CSPI) were also in attendance. Plenary and breakout sessions provided opportunities for presentations and discussion. Drs. Arendt, Rajagopal and Strohbehn gave a total of four standup presentations over the three-day conference. Comments from attendees to their sessions included, “Wow, Iowa State is sure doing a lot” and “We use your food safety materials all the time”. ISU Alums were also visible in that three additional presentations were given by recent FLM graduates, including one by Dr. Janey Thornton, USDA Under-Secretary Food and Nutrition Service at a plenary session.
