Tops and Bottoms CoverTops & Bottoms
by Janet Stevens.
1995. Harcourt Brace.
ISBN: 0152928510
$16.00

Reading level: ages 4 - 8

Janet Stevens cleverly retells an African-American folktale about a lazy bear and an industrious rabbit, a trickster, who grows different crops each year on the bear's land. Every spring, the sly rabbit makes a deal with the bear and always out-tricks him out of the best part of the harvest. Sometimes the bear wants the top of the crops while the hare takes the bottoms. Other times the bear demands the bottoms, so the clever rabbits plants a crop that the tops are the best part to eat. The story provides a fun way for children to learn about the parts of the plants that we eat. The illustrations are marvelous and really bring the story to life! Tops and Bottoms was a 1996 Caldecott Honor book for best illustrations in a book for children.

Tops and Bottoms is an excellent book to accompany the Growing in the Garden: K-3 Curriculum, Grade One lessons titled "My Totally Tasty Plant" and "Outdoor Classroom: A Salad Garden."
