Iowa State University Extension is working hard around the globe to promote, facilitate, and activate international developmental opportunities that enhance Iowa communities as well as national and international communities. Our objective is to develop the individual capacity of Iowa State University Extension staff to lead in a global society. 

To that end, we also propose the development of a Global Academy for Extension Practice that will help establish a set of core competencies for extension professionals around the world.

uganda2 Second Group of Iowa Farmer Volunteers Works with Ugandan Farmers

A second group of Iowa women traveled to Uganda as part of the rural development program, Bridging the Gap: Increasing Competitiveness of Ugandan Women Farmers in the Marketplace. This farmer-to-farmer program connects Iowa farmers with eight groups of women farmers in the Kamuli District of Uganda.

Program Offers Students Opportunity to Travel, Learn in China

Select Iowa high school students will have the opportunity to visit China this summer as part of the Global Youth Excellence Program. The program is designed to help Iowa youth gain the necessary international knowledge and skills to meet the demands of the new global economy.

The application period is now open, and closes April 29.

uganda Volunteer Opportunity in Uganda for Iowa Women Farmers

Iowa women farmers are needed for short-term volunteer positions in Uganda in 2011. As volunteers, Iowans will work in teams with the Iowa State University Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods and Extension staff, and members of VEDCO (Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns), a non-profit development organization in Uganda.

Teams will work with an interpreter to interview and provide input to Ugandan women farmers that will help enhance their farm’s profitability through increased efficiencies, improved quality, development or expansion of new enterprises or changes in marketing.

ICTs in Support of Revitalizing Extension and Advisory Services: Opportunities and Challenges

Iowa State University Global Extension announces the global consultation on “ICTs in Support of Revitalizing Extension and Advisory Services: Opportunities and Challenges”.

The consultation/workshop will take place at the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, USA, on October 11, 2010.

The purpose of this event is to identify and define concrete areas of action that address emerging challenges and exploit opportunities for ICTs in support of extension and rural advisory services. The consultation/workshop will also identify trends, opportunities and challenges and will seek to define options for future directions in investment, institutions and innovation.

“International conference on Innovative approaches for Agricultural Knowledge Management: Global Extension Experiences”, will be organized by INSEE in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Iowa State University (ISU) and International Potato Center (CIP).

Field Agronomist Alum Volunteers in Ukraine

Mark Licht, ISU Extension field agronomist, recently returned from a volunteer assignment to Ukraine where he advised farmers on how to improve their practices in growing and harvesting corn and soybeans. His trip was part of a project with CNFA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people and enterprises in the developing world. Licht earned a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and agricultural extension education in 2000 and a master’s degree in soil science in 2003.

Information and Communication Technology for Agricultural Development in India

Principal scientist from the National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), Sandhya Shenoy was in Ames to share her Indian experience in the use of ICT for agricultural development. NAARM was established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) at Hyderabad, in 1976 to fulfill the need for an institution of management in agricultural research, education, extension, and agri-business.

Nigerian Swine Team Training in Iowa

This team of six Nigerians arrived Sep 20 to begin their three-month swine production training program with Iowa State University under the leadership of ISU Extension veterinarian Dr. Jim McKean. The six swine production specialists, Dr. Hangem Deborah Seember, Torhemen Michael, Taangahar David Vayima, Iorgyer Mary Iveren, Tingir Joy Ngo and Saawuan Wilfred Iorkumba, were placed in an immersive learning environment coordinated by an Iowa-based commercial production company.

So during October’s World Food Prize events in Des Moines, ISU Extension began a new collaboration with an international development organization dealing with hunger and poverty.

Another group of teachers from Lanzhou and Lianyungang came to Iowa State University this summer to attend the second annual teacher-training program offered by the Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP) through Global Extension. The focus of this year’s professional development course is on classroom activities and issues related to classroom planning and implementation.
