4-H Youth Development

Iowa 4-H is a community of young people who are learning citizenship, leadership and life skills. ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development programs ensure that every youth will have the opportunity to participate in 4-H experiences that strengthen his or her sense of belonging, generosity, independence and mastery.

• 124,380 Iowa youth are enrolled in 4-H Youth Development programs — more than 24 percent of school-age youth in the state.

• 72,893 youth participate in 4-H school enrichment programs.

• Nearly 10,600 adults and more than 1,400 youth volunteer in 4-H Youth Development programs.

• 32,004 youth participate in 1,760 Iowa 4-H clubs.

• 18,000 Iowa youth had six or more hours of contact with E-SET (Extension–Science, Engineering and Technology) programs through 4-H or their classrooms.

• More than 30,000 kindergarten through sixth grade youth annually participate in Growing in the Garden and Where We Live, ISU Extension curricula that demonstrate connections among agriculture, natural resources, food and people.
