More Extension centennial events planned

Nearly 300 people braved a spring snowstorm to attend the kickoff reception and dinner celebrating 100 years of Extension in Iowa. On April 7 they traveled to Hull, in the far northwest corner of the state, the “birthplace” of Iowa Extension.

In 1903, a farmer from Hull asked Iowa State agronomist Perry Holden whether the university’s research was applicable in northwest Iowa. To find out, Holden and the Sioux County Farmers Institute established the nation’s first county cooperative experimental farm.

Other Extension centennial celebrations will be held with the following events:
• Aug. 7, Home Garden Demonstration Field Day, Lewis
• Aug. 7-17, Iowa State Fair
• Sept. 14, Clay County Fair
• Sept. 11, CIRAS 40th anniversary celebration on campus
• Nov. 8, Extension 4-H building dedication on campus

Check the Web for more information about Extension’s centennial.
