ISU Extension: Celebrating 100 years of helping Iowans become their best

During 2003, Iowa State University Extension celebrates 100 years of helping Iowans become their best. Extension began in Iowa in 1903, 11 years before the national cooperative extension network was established. A group of Sioux County farmers cooperated with Iowa State to establish the “extension idea” — taking the land-grant college to the people. Today with a presence in every county, innovative use of modern communication technology and extensive partnerships, ISU Extension engages Iowans with their land-grant university.

Several special events are planned throughout the year to celebrate Extension’s anniversary. The kick-off reception and dinner was held April 7 in Hull. Other activities throughout the year include campus and county events, recognition of local leaders, a display at the Iowa State Fair, the dedication of the Extension 4-H building Nov. 8 and Extension Week, Nov. 16-22.

2003 also marks the 40th anniversary of the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS). In July 1963, the Iowa Legislature appropriated funds and authorized the Board of Regents to establish CIRAS at ISU to counsel industry, advise on appropriate procedures for growth and conduct research and testing programs. CIRAS also was charged with providing technical and managerial information through publications and conferences specially designed for industry use.
