Iowa State Unviersity Extension

Celebrating 100 years of helping Iowans
become their best

In 1903, a farmer from Hull asked Iowa State College agronomist Perry Holden whether the college’s research was applicable in northwest Iowa. To find out, Holden and the Sioux County Farmers Institute established the nation’s first county cooperative experimental farm. One hundred years later, nearly 300 people braved a spring snowstorm to head to Hull, the “birthplace” of Iowa Extension, to attend the kickoff event celebrating the centennial.

Other Iowa State University Extension centennial celebrations were held throughout the year and during Extension Week, celebrated statewide Nov. 16-22.
