Community Vitality Center encourages growth, development in rural Iowa. Iowa State University Extension and College of Agriculture, Positively Iowa and 20 leaders from around the state have joined forces to pursue rural development projects statewide.

State 4-H Council trains tomorrow's leaders. The State 4-H Council, a group of 40 4-H members from the five ISU Extension areas throughout the state, develops leadership and responsibility among the state’s top 4-H’ers.

Extension ethicist to help with biotechnology issues. In an effort to help Iowans with ethical issues related to biotechnology, Iowa State University Extension has hired an ethicist to work with staff on biotechnology projects and provide educational opportunities on bioethics.

Farmers rate ethical behavior. How do farmers perceive ethical behavior in American society? Iowa State University’s 2002 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll asked nearly 3,000 farm operators their opinions about ethical standards, using a series of questions first asked in 1993. Usable responses were received from 1,960 farmers.

'Virtual' marketing improves 'Real' business. Entrepreneurs in business are always looking for new ways to get their products to their customers. A pair of Iowa livestock producers and a local businessperson turned to the Internet, and with help from Iowa State University Extension, created a “virtual market” for the producers’ meat.

‘Trustworthy neighbor’: Extension helps families cope with tough times. Rural families can look to Iowa State University Extension in their county as a reliable resource of information and help — a trustworthy neighbor. And for the past year ISU Extension has taken additional steps to help families cope with tough economic times and life changes, through the Iowa Rural Mental Health Initiative.

Students experience community-based learning. Twenty ISU students are part of Iowa State University Extension’s innovative distance education opportunity called Life in Iowa. They earned college credits this summer by living, working and providing community service to rural Iowa communities.
