Iowa 2010: Share the vision

More than 3,000 Iowans participated in 80 open meetings this spring at local restaurants, school cafeterias, community centers and reception halls across the state. They were talking about "The New Face of Iowa," a report outlining a vision of Iowa in the year 2010.

That vision was developed by Gov. Tom Vilsack’s Strategic Planning Council. Iowa State University Extension worked with the council to organize the public meetings, often held in partnership with local civic organizations.

Gov. Tom Vilsack talked with participants during an Iowa 2010 dialogue in Butler County.

"We found that people care deeply about our state," said David Oman, council chair. "I hope that the discussions we held will cause some people to grab hold of our report, work with it and see what can be done in their community."

Council member Margo Underwood was pleased with the enthusiasm generated at the meetings. "Our challenge is to get every Iowan involved. Community strategic plans are being developed across Iowa that include strategies to help grow Iowa, encourage entrepreneurs and enhance the quality of life."

Some members of the council and others have formed Iowans for a Better Future, a nonpartisan, not-for-profit corporation, to address the goals and action steps of the Iowa 2010 plan, said Oman, co-chair of that group.

The Strategic Planning Council’s report is available on the Web.
