4-H celebrates 100 years

In Iowa, 4-H traces its start to Page County boys and girls clubs begun in 1901. This centennial will be honored throughout 2001-2002 in club, county and state events, displays, historical reviews and other activities, according to Joe Kurth, director of Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.

“We are encouraging all Iowa 4-H groups to complete 100 hours of community service,” Kurth said. “It might be a county-wide project for all to work together on or an activity within a local community. For example, each of 20 4-H’ers could contribute five hours to reach their club’s 100-hour goal.”

Youth and adults from all of Iowa’s counties also will participate in the National Conversation on Youth Development in the 21st Century, Kurth added. Discussions will be held at the county, state and national level.
