| Description: | Looming uncertainty in the markets can keep young farmers on the figurative edge of their financial seats. Understanding how to assess, manage and modify one’s financial situation is key to maintaining a more positive outlook. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Patrick Wall said a new beginning farmer program offered through the organization will help address these issues and concerns. The first meeting for this new group in south central Iowa is set for Thursday, Aug. 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Marion County Extension office in Knoxville. There’s no cost, and a meal will be provided. “We find tremendous variability when evaluating young producers’ farm financials, because the day-to-day demands of the farm often take precedence over record-keeping or risk management,” Wall said. “This meeting offers them a chance to slow down and better understand the financial position of their farming operation, how to address areas of concern and capitalize on opportunity.” The event will conclude with a tour of Clark Family Dairy, an organic milk producer in rural Pleasantville. The tour is a great example of diversification and collaborating with neighbors to earn more dollars per acre. The dairy cooperates with neighbors to obtain organic corn, hay, and manure, helping both operations profit. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with others during the meeting and tour, and help design the group’s meeting series and structure moving forward.
