Title: Cover Crop Economics: Affordable or Not?

Description: Soil health and cover crop workshops are coming to the Grundy County Fair this year on Wednesday, July 20, 2016! The day starts at 7:30 a.m. with the Tri County Ag meeting. Eat a hot breakfast and hear the grain market update and crop lease outlook from ISU Extension Farm Management Specialist, Chad Hart, and IPTV’s “Market to Market” host Mike Pearson. At 9:00 a.m. Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey’s representative will kick off “Cover Crop Economics: Affordable or Not”. You’ll learn from experts about cover crops and livestock usage; soil health to crop economics. Speakers include, Jerry Hatfield, USDA Agricultural Research Service, Jack Boyer, local farmers and PFI on-farm research cooperator; Liz Juchems and Jamie Benning with Iowa Learning Farms, Wade Dooley, local farmer as well as a local farmer panel to answer questions about their firsthand experience growing cover crops and the economic impacts on their farms. End the event with a hearty lunch and get ready to make your fall cover crop decisions. Another exciting addition to the day will be the chance to walk through and participate with the Iowa Conservation Station from Iowa Learning Farms! Another exciting activity Wednesday, July 20, 2016 will be the Every Day Tractor Ride, sponsored by Farm Bureau. The Every Day Tractor Ride features tractors in their “every day working clothes”. Participants are asked to contact Karen at Farm Bureau at 319-824-5212 to pre-register. Cost is $25. Pre-registration for the tractor ride required if you wish to receive a t-shirt. 100% of proceeds from the Every Day Tractor ride are put toward a scholarship for area youth interested in pursuing a degree in agriculture.
