Iowa 4-H Center Summer Camp Staff Positions

General Qualifications:
•  Desire and ability to work with children in the outdoors for extended periods of time. Ability to work cooperatively with other staff in a team-oriented environment. Previous experience supervising or caring for youth 6 to 16 years of age. Flexibility, creativity & enthusiasm.
•  Minimum age for full-summer staff is 18 years of age by May 1, 2005. We prefer candidates with college experience. Students of all college majors are encouraged to apply.
•  Work days are May 23-August 7, 2005 with holidays and Saturday noon thru Sunday noon off each week. Staff must be willing to live on-site. A $100 bonus will be given to each staff member who misses no more than one full day of work during the summer.
•  4-H membership is not required to attend our camps or to work on our camp staff.

General Information:
•  Each staff member receives a salary plus: air-conditioned housing, meals, internet access, a staff lounge, laundry facilities, staff shirts, training, necessary certifications, and camp store discounts. Just room and board for the summer equal an added benefit of $2,299 per staff member for the summer.

Jr. Counselors/Counselors in Training:
Volunteer any week of summer camp for hands-on counselor training as you shadow 4-H Center college-age camp counselors. Through training, observation, and practice learn leadership skills, safety, youth development strategies, operation procedures, and camp traditions. Provide a friendly and supportive living environment for a cabin of 6-8 campers while ensuring they each have a safe, fun and educational camping experience. Assist with camp activities and programs such as, but not limited to: crafts, recreation, activities, night/day hikes, creek walks, team challenge, camp fire programs, songs/skits, and flag ceremonies. (Volunteers who are 15-18 years old)
Need: MANY. Volunteer for week or half week camps during the summer. Fill out the CIT Application on our website.

Head Counselors:
Provide a friendly and supportive living environment for a cabin of 6-8 campers each week while ensuring they each have a safe, fun and educational camping experience. Assist with supervising and supporting the Jr. Counselors each week. Plan, present, or assist with camp activities and programs such as, but not limited to: crafts, recreation, activities, night/day hikes, creek walks, team challenge, camp fire programs, songs/skits, and flag ceremonies. Counselors rotate age levels from week to week, and will work in a variety of program areas throughout the summer. (Staff with previous experience counseling at Iowa 4-H Center camps preferred)
Need: 4. Salary: $180/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Lifeguard:
Assist the Aquatic Specialist with the safe, educational & fun operation of the aquatics program including the Water World camp sessions, open swim hours, pond canoeing, river canoe trips, kayaking, and general pool area maintenance. This position may be doubled up with a separate position, for example we hire General Programmers who also have their lifeguard certification.
Need: 5. Salary: $180/week if we train you or $190/week if you already have certification, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Office Assistant/Camp Store Manager:
From the comfort of the air-conditioned camp office assist the Camp Secretary with registrations, marketing, database updates, mailings, filing, taking photos, and putting them on the website. Run store hours for campers, keep camper store tabs, create sale displays, keep a monthly inventory, order and restock all camp merchandise, and market store items to campers and their families. Also assist with evening camp activities & programs.
Need: 1. Salary: $180/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service .

Health Aide:
Care for the medical needs of campers, counselors and staff. This responsibility involves all health-related issues, including collecting health forms, distributing medication, administering first aid, and determining when a camper or staff member should be sent to a hospital for any additional treatment. Maintain the Health Center supplies & first-aid kits and be available for all emergencies when on-call. (21 years old, 2 years of college, health related certifications or license)
Need: 1. Salary: $200/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Outdoor Camping Specialist:
Responsible for the operation and leading of a successful outdoor cooking, camping, survival skills, orienteering, GPS, and hiking program. Oversee all out-post and off-site camping events including logistics, food and equipment planning. Also assist with general camp programming activities and other camp related duties. (20 years old and 1 year camping experience preferred)
Need: 1. Salary: $190/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Nature Education Specialist:
Responsible for the operation of a successful nature education program including planning the Birds, Beasts, Bugs & Us camp and organizing the camp Nature Center. Knowledge/experience leading fishing, day/night hikes, pond studies, astronomy, tree identification, ecology, wildlife, and conservation activities is recommended.
Need: 1. Salary: $190/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

General Programmer:
Assist in covering program needs in any area. Become cross-trained to fill in for various staff leading activities such as campfire programs, skit nights, Team Challenge, creek walks, & general games. Also assist with evening programs & camper supervision.
Need: up to 3. Salary: $180/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Challenge Course Specialist:
Responsible for the operation of successful teams, high ropes, climbing & rappelling program. Provide leadership for the High Adventure, Vertical Challenge, and Little Wall Climbers camps. We have a 50-foot climbing & rappelling tower, a 6-element high ropes course including a zip line, and a low ropes challenge course. We are offering a certification training May 20-22. (Must be at least 19 years of age)
Need: 1. Salary: $190/week or $200/week if already trained, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Day Camp Director:
Work with the Program Specialist to market, organize, and program the 4-H Day Camps. Assist with creation of weekly themes and supervision of camp staff in the day camp area. Drive to pick up campers each day for camp activities, snacks, crafts, lunch, and swimming, then drive them back to meet their parents. Day Camp staff will also assist with state camp evening activities. (2 years of college preferred)
Need: 1. Salary: $190/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Maintenance Assistant:
Work with Camp Manager to maintain Iowa 4–H Center grounds & facilities during the camping season (e.g. clear trails, split wood, repairs, and general facility maintenance). Assist with camp games, special programs, and campfires in the evenings. (19 years old and previous experience driving tractors and using tools)
Need: 1. Salary: $190/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Weekend Retreat Host:
On-site housing will be provided as you cover hosting duties for weekend rental groups. Hosting duties may include: unlocking buildings, prepping lodges, cleaning, possible program leading, answering questions, and helping in the kitchen. Work begins Saturday morning and ends at noon on Sunday. (Previous camping, maintenance and/or supervision experience required)
Need: 1 per weekend. Salary: $60/weekend.

Archery Instructor:
Responsible for the supervision & safe operation of the camp shooting sports program. Teach beginning & advanced archery, maintain equipment, and assist with skeet shooting, air guns, & muzzleloader programs. Also assist with general camp programs. (Archery certification required)
Need: 2. Salary: $180/week if we train you or $185/week if you have archery certification, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Arts & Crafts Specialist:
Responsible for the operation of a successful, fun, & educational Arts & Crafts program for state camps, day camps, rental groups, and any related programs. Order and organize craft supplies, supervise the craft room, create & teach meaningful craft projects for campers, and train other staff to assist you.
Need: 1. Salary: $180/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Aquatic Specialist:
Responsible for safe, educational & fun operation of the aquatics program including the Water World camp sessions, open swim hours, pond canoeing, river canoe trips, kayaking, and general pool area maintenance. Work with the camp manager in control and distribution of chemicals. Maintain clean and safe swimming pool area. Enforce pool regulations and direct emergency procedures in accordance with ACA and camp policy. (Must be 21 years old with current CPR and lifeguard certification. WSI cert. preferred)
Need: 1. Salary: $190/week, first year, plus $10/wk for each year of service.

Dining Room Host:
Be the important connection between the kitchen staff and the camp staff. Assist the kitchen staff in preparing for camper meals and snacks. Lead kitchen patrol in set-up and clean-up of the family-style meals. Assist with other camp activities in the evening.
