2013 Iowa 4-H Film Festival

A film showcase for youth

The Iowa 4-H Film Festival provides youth the opportunity to develop written, oral, visual and electronic communication skills while expressing their creativity through digital storytelling. The showcase will give youth the chance to share their multimedia project with the public and receive feedback from film professionals and other youth participants.


August 17, 2013 from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Who can participate?

Individuals or teams comprised of youth enrolled in 5th – 12th grades in the 2012-2013 school year are eligible for participation. At least one member of the team must be a 4-H member. (It's easy to join 4-H!)

Production Teams:

Each team can have between 1 and 10 members, at least one of which must be a 4-H member. (It's easy to Join 4-H!) All awards will be shared among production team members. For more details about the Festival an submission guidelines click here (pdf). Youth do not need to be a part of a team to compete in the 4-H Film Festival.

Category Descriptions:

  • Educate: Provide information or training on a specific topic
  • Inspire: Raise awareness about an issue or call viewers to action
  • Just 4 Fun: Videos intended to entertain

Submitting Your Film:

Films must follow the Submission Guidelines (pdf) and must be submitted via the online application by July 20, 2013 in order to be evaluated and included in the festival. Applicants must submit the following materials in the online submission form:

  • Film
  • Introductory Clip
  • Team Member Information
  • 4-H Film Festival Team Agreement

The Iowa 4-H Film Festival reserves the right to determine the eligibility of any work, reject any submission, and make executive decisions on individual situtations not foreseen by these guidelines.

After Registering:

Your production team will receive:

  • Regular Iowa 4-H Film Festival updates and filmmaking tips from a professional filmmaker
  • Copies of the Iowa 4-H Film Festival Official Rules
  • An evaluation form for each member of your team to complete before and after participating in this event

The Festival:

Individuals and teams will have their film(s) showcased throughout the Iowa State Fair in the 4-H Exhibits Building. A special showcase of the films will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m.  Participants and fairgoers will gather in the 4-H Exhibits Building on the Iowa State fairgrounds to watch a public showing of the youth-produced films. Each participant or team will be given a schedule time to showcase their films in the morning or afternoon on August 17, 2013.

Awards and Evaluation:

Youth participants will receive written and oral evaluations from film professionals and their peers following the morning and afternoon showcase. Each participant will be asked to evaluate one other film along the panel of evaluators. Participants will each receive an Iowa State Fair t-shirt and admissions ticket. The professional evaluators will award certificates to all participants at the end of both the morning and afternoon sessions.
