In 4-H, youth develop healthy physical, social, and emotional behaviors and life skills. We develop community capacity to promote healthy environments and as a result increase the ability of youth to demonstrate positive contributions to their families, schools, and communities.
Science, Engineering, Technology and Math
STEM programs offer valuable science process skills and workforce skills in communication, leadership, and citizenship. These programs connect youth and volunteers with fun, safe, hands-on learning experiences developed by Iowa State University.
Citizenship and Leadership
In 4-H, we emphasize service learning processes and methods for including youth in community, state, and/or national decision making experiences. Emphasis is placed on programs that have long-term youth and community benefits.
Communication and Arts
4-H youth gain confidence when speaking in front of others, feel comfortable asking questions, demonstrate good listening skills, use technology to express ideas, create products to share ideas/information and express themselves through the creative process.
In Iowa, almost 10,000 volunteers guide 4-H members in becoming productive citizens, outstanding communicators, effective leaders, and successful learners. We need more volunteers who are willing to share their creative ideas, time, talent, and skills.
