Q: What kind of health requirements do state fair pigs need to follow this year?
A: As of July 9, 2004, Iowa went to a Stage V status for pseudorabies. This status eliminates the need for native Iowa swine to be tested prior to exhibition. Swine that return from an exhibition must be isolated for 30-60 days.
Q: What's up with the DNA?
A: All market and derby swine wishing to participate at the Iowa State Fair MUST have been weighed, tattooed and tagged at an official verification site, as well as had a DNA sample taken from the nominated animal. Both exhibitors and parents must have completed and signed the state fair verification form. This has been done to ensure the integrity of the 4-H program.
Q: How many pigs can I bring?
A: Here are the limits:
Breeding gilts: an exhibitor may enter two purebred breeding gilts per breed. Additionally each exhibitor is limited to entering two commercial breeding gilts.
Market & Derby: The maximum number of market and derby hogs combined is 12 pigs. Possible combinations could be: a) 1-3 market pigs require at least 1 derby pig; b) 4-6 market pigs require at least 2 derby pigs; c) 7-9 market pigs require at least 3 derby pigs; d) if only derby pigs are exhibited, the maximum would be 12 derby pigs, with no more than 6 of those pigs being crossbred and no more than 6 being purebred.
Q: Do I need to bring anything with me to the check-in line?
A: Bring your swine check-in form that lists the pigs you have brought and your original registration papers (for any purebred hogs). Stamped health papers and drug affidavits are to be taken to the 4-H Swine Office. It would be wise to bring your copy of the 4-H swine identification papers and weigh-in sheets with you to the fair in case there are questions.
Q: Do the registration papers have to be in the 4-H'ers name?
A: Registration papers must be registered in the 4-H'ers name or show a logical family connection: Example: John Doe could have a pig registered to Doe Family Farms - that is a logical family relationship. However, papers using the name of Hilltop Acres would not indicate a logical family relationship. Original registration papers must be presented in the check-in line.
Q: Do we need to do anything with the FSQA certification for state fair?
A: YES, all swine exhibitors must include a copy of their Food Safety and Quality Assurance certification along with their entry form and identification forms.
Q: We are all done showing and ready to go home, what do we need to do?
A: Unless your vehicle is already on the grounds with a valid parking pass, a Livestock Load-out pass will be needed to get your pickup and trailer back in the fairgrounds to load out. These will be available from the 4-H swine office. Please return these before leaving the grounds.
Q: Where can I park?
A: Lot T parking passes will be available for $6.00 each in the Administration Building . You may purchase them when you arrive, or at the same time that you order your discount tickets. Your extension office will have the discount ticket order form.
