Iowa State University celebrates 150 years with community service projects

Iowa State University (ISU) alumni, 4-H members, Master Gardeners, Extension staff and other friends of Extension celebrated Iowa State University’s 150th birthday Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10, by painting the Sadler House in Old Town on the Woodbury County Fairgrounds. Woodbury County Extension hosted the event. Nancy and Jack Burright made the necessary preparations for the crew.

“We are proud of the quality of education that exists with Iowa State University, and we wanted to give back something of value in our county in honor of the birthday,” said Woodbury County Extension Education Director Sherry McGill. “I am so thankful to everyone who made the ISU sesquicentennial community service project a success! It was wonderful to bring together alumni, 4-H members, Master Gardeners and staff for such a great and meaningful project.” Each of the Extension offices in the 99 counties will be completing community enrichment projects in honor of ISU’s sesquicentennial.

Carol Gieske, a staff member from Iowa State University, came to assist in the community service project and presented a beautiful plaque to commemorate ISU’s sesquicentennial and the work completed.

ISU Extension-Woodbury County will also be a part of a playground build day at Chris Larsen Park in Sioux City on Saturday, September 15, 2007. This will be in partnership with the Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department. Please contact Sherry McGill if interested in learning more about this project at (712) 276-2157, mcgills@iastate.edu, or visit www.extension.iastate.edu/woodbury to download a registration form.

Also, look for Cy the Cyclone, ISU students and alumni, 4-H members, Master Gardeners, staff and other friends of Extension from Woodbury and Monona Counties Wednesday, July 18 in the Rivercade Parade in Sioux City. If you would like to join Cy and his friends in the parade, please contact Sherry McGill for that as well, (712) 276-2157.
