To honor and celebrate ISU’s 150 years, three trees were planted in front of the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation building, representing the partnership in education between Iowa State University Extension, the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation and Northeast Iowa Community College. The Decorah third graders, staff from Winneshiek County ISU Extension, NICC and the Dairy Foundation watched as NICC arboriculture students planted the trees as part of their day participating in the Iowa Dairy Story, an educational "hands-on" program that teaches youth about the past, present and future of Iowa's dairy industry. NICC arboriculture students, under the direction of their instructor, Rick Tagtow taught the third grade students how the trees were selected and planted.
“We’re a century and a half old, but we don’t look it,” said Jack Payne, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach. “From hybrid seed corn to biofuels, Iowa State University Extension has been relevant to Iowans by addressing important issues. Extension educators live in the communities where they work, so they can help connect Iowans to everything ISU has to offer.”
