Proclamation from Governor Vilsack
on 100 Year Inaugural Celebration of ISU Extension in Iowa

Proclamation

WHEREAS, for the past 100 years, Extension has been helping Iowans become their best; and

WHEREAS, Extension began at the request of the people of Iowa, when in 1903 Sioux county farmers from Hull cooperated with Iowa State to bring the land-grant college to the people; and

WHEREAS, Iowa became the model for cooperative Extension work, which was adopted nationwide 11 years later in 1914 with the passing of the Smith-Lever Act; and

WHEREAS, Extension partners with Iowans, including 900 located elected Extension council members, to provide research-based learning opportunities to improve quality of life in Iowa; and

WHEREAS, Extension embraces the university's strategic goals of learning, discovery, and engagement, and through an active partnership and presence in every county, provides Iowans with access to the resources of the university and communicates the priorities of the citizens to the university; and

WHEREAS, Extension is well positioned to support the growth and development of Iowa in the knowledge-based economy and society of the 21st century:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Thomas J. Vilsack, Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby proclaim April 7, 2003, as the kickoff for the

100 YEAR INAUGURAL CELEBRATION OF ISU EXTENSION IN IOWA.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto subscribed my name and caused the Great Seal of the State of Iowa to be affixed. Done at Des Moines this 13th day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand three.
